Biography

Inez was born in 1870 in Farina, Illinois, the daughter of Silas Fitz Randolph and Emily Ann Lusk. She married Oscar Clark Wells in 1891. They remained in Farina to farm and have six children together. Inez passed away in Farina in 1947 and is buried with her husband in the Farina Cemetery.

Inez's name is sometimes spelled 'Ines', including on her gravestone.

Obituary

The Sabbath Recorder, Vol 142, No 15, p 255, Apr. 14, 1947. (Posted at FindaGrave Memorial #102696803, accessed 24 Feb 2016)

"Inez Fitz Randolph Wells was born at Farina, Ill., October 11, 1870, and died at her home in Farina, February 5, 1947.

When a young woman she was baptized by Rev. C. A. Burdick and joined the Seventh Day Baptist Church. Here she was a faithful worker and attendant all her life.

February 21, 1891, she was united in marriage to Oscar Clark Wells, and to them six children were born, Ernest, dying in infancy. In 1941 they celebrated their golden wedding and the appreciation of the community for their long and faithful service was expressed in gifts of flowers, postal cards, and in expressions of good will.

Sister Wells will be greatly missed from her accustomed place in the home and in the community and from the church services from which she was seldom absent.

She is survived, aside from her husband, by five children: Mrs. Oma Morley and Mrs. Gail Alderdice of Battle Creek, Mich., Mrs. Elsie Russel of Berkeley, Calif., Glen of Farina, and George of Joliet, Ill.; by two sisters, Mrs. C. E. Persels and Mrs. Mabel Allen of Farina.

Funeral services were conducted at the church by her pastor, Rev. C. L. Hill, February 7, 1947, and burial was made in the Farina Cemetery. C. L. H."

Surname Note

In this Fitz Randolph family, Fitz appears to have been used by all family members in the family where Inez is a child as if part of their surname in addition to a middle name (Verlette for Inez).

While Silas maintained the Fitz as his middle name, the 1880 census at least does not apply the Fitz to anyone else in the family.

In some censuses and birth records, the family is recorded using 'FitzRandolph' or 'Fitz Randolph'. The current consensus is therefore to use the surname 'Fitz Randolph' as Last Name at Birth for Inez, her siblings and father. Please don't hesitate to contact the profile manager if you think this decision should be reviewed.

  • 1880 census: Fitz only indicated as middle initial for Silas
  • Inez's death record: no mention of Fitz
  • 1947 obituary refers to her as 'Inez Fitz Randolph Wells', indicating that her maiden was considered 'Fitz Randolph'
